CBD oil for enlarged prostate

Cannabidiol (CBD) has gained its supporters thanks to its proven effectiveness in the fight against anxiety, epilepsy, pain and other problems. The use of CBD oil for problems such as an enlarged prostate is quite common, and although research is still in its infancy (and most of the evidence for its effectiveness is anecdotal), the popularity of the compound continues to grow.

Like THC, CBD is a cannabinoid, the active substance contained in hemp. However, unlike THC, CBD does not have psychoactive effects and thus does not produce a "high". Some researchers are investigating cannabidiol and other cannabinoids as part of a broader treatment for common prostate problems, including prostate cancer and prostate enlargement. We currently know little for certain, but scientists have uncovered some interesting findings. Before we get into the details of using CBD for enlarged prostate (and other prostate problems), a brief explanation is in order. For the purposes of this article, we will cover the three most common prostate problems that men face:

  • benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, commonly known as an enlarged prostate)
  • prostatitis (bacterial and non-bacterial)
  • prostate cancer

Each of these ailments has its own causes, treatments and aspects when it comes to cannabidiol use.

Benefits of CBD for enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia)

The term "enlarged prostate" most commonly refers to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This is a condition where the prostate is enlarged but not affected by cancer. It commonly affects older men and can cause unpleasant symptoms such as painful urination, hip and pelvic pain, blood in the urine or semen, painful ejaculation and frequent urination.

Although an enlarged prostate can have a number of causes including inflammation, urinary tract infection, and kidney stones, it's important to understand what role testosterone plays. Testosterone causes the prostate to grow, so it is possible to reduce the likelihood of hyperplasia by slowing its production.

Some research suggests that cannabinoids such as cannabidiol may inhibit testosterone production. This can prove beneficial for people who struggle with recurrent BPH. Although researchers most commonly associate the cannabinoid THC with this effect , CBD and other cannabinoids may also be beneficial.

For BPH sufferers, there is another potential benefit of using CBD : pain relief. In a comprehensive review of studies on cannabis, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine found that "there is convincing or substantial evidence that cannabis, or the cannabinoids found in cannabis, are effective in the treatment of chronic pain in adults." A study by the University of South Carolina School of Medicine found that cannabidiol is among the most effective cannabinoids for inflammation .

CBD for prostatitis

Prostatitis is a disease that is commonly caused by a certain type of bacteria that enters the prostate from the urinary tract. It can also be caused by a sexually transmitted disease such as HIV or chlamydia. The disease can be chronic or acute and affects people of all ages.

As with an enlarged prostate, cannabidiol can reduce the pain , discomfort and inflammation associated with this condition. More interestingly, cannabidiol may have antibacterial properties that can address the problem at its source. Researchers at the University of Queensland's Institute of Molecular Biology tested the antibacterial properties of CBD and found that it "has very similar efficacy to conventional antibiotics." This is an interesting development because antibiotics are the most common treatment for prostatitis.

CBD and prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer that men face (the first is skin cancer). In the past few years, researchers have been looking at cannabinoids as a potential treatment option for people with prostate cancer. A 2013 study found cannabidiol to be particularly effective among cannabinoids as a "cell killer" of prostate cancer. A growing body of research confirms this potential. While cannabidiol will not cure prostate cancer, the compound may be effective in preventing and treating the disease.

In addition, CBD can help with vomiting and nausea, conditions associated with chemotherapy. Research points to a link between the body's endocannabinoid system (internal receptors that respond to cannabinoids) and areas of the brain responsible for nausea and vomiting. For those dealing with nausea as part of cancer treatment, CBD can help provide some relief .

Should You Use Cannabis or CBD for Prostate Problems?

Admittedly, much of the research has focused on the whole cannabis plant and the full spectrum of cannabinoids, which begs the question of whether CBD is of equal value on its own. Although cannabidiol should provide at least some of the desired benefit, here are factors to consider: CBD is not psychoactive, while the whole hemp plant is psychoactive. If you don't want a high or are concerned about being drug tested, stick with cannabidiol .

Cannabis can have an overall stronger effect due to the entourage effect (the interaction of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds that maximizes the plant's effect). However, a full-spectrum CBD product can also offer an accompanying effect, to a slightly lesser extent. This is because it contains all compounds including THC – the THC content in hemp products is limited by law to 1% in the Czech Republic. If you are considering CBD for prostate problems, consult your doctor first. Then consider whether cannabidiol or other cannabinoids might be an appropriate part of your treatment. CBD has few side effects and is well tolerated by most people, so it's worth trying even if the benefits turn out to be small.
